Executive Head Teacher and all round fossil expert, Mrs Bridges, visited Year 6 this morning to give a fascinating talk all about fossils and show us her collection from her many fossil hunting holidays on the beaches of Whitby in particular Saltwick Nab beach which is the best for fossils.

Mrs Bridges showed the Year 6’s a range of fossils that she has collected over the years and explained the differences between an ammonite (just their shell – shaped fossil) and a belemnite (squid like). Mrs Bridges told the children that in order to find a fossil you needed to use a very special piece of equipment, a fossil hammer, to break open the rocks in order to find a fossil inside.

The children were fascinated to discover that they were holding something in their hands that was once alive, millions and millions of years ago and that they could be found on beaches not far from Sheffield.
